Karma: The Dark World Review – A Psychological Horror Experience with a Unique Chinese Style

In a world of horror games where repetition is common in style and ideas, Karma: The Dark World emerges as a different kind of game, offering deep psychological horror and a unique exploratory experience. Developed by Pollard Studio, it breaks the traditional molds of horror games, which is why we at Games2Egypt decided to review it and share our full experience.

  • Story – Mystery, Investigation, and the Human Mind

The game begins with an amnesiac protagonist waking up in a strange medical facility. We quickly discover that we're inside a parallel world controlled by the Leviathan Corporation, which has developed a technology that links everything to a centralized AI called "Mother." The world resembles a dystopia similar to movies like Equilibrium or 1984.

The main character, Daniel McGovern, is a private investigator using advanced tech called "Brain Dive" that allows him to enter others’ minds and relive their memories. Through investigating mysterious thefts, a dark and frightening journey unfolds, exposing terrifying psychological conflicts and deep human tragedies.

The story features excellent pacing and smart escalation from internal psychological horror to uncovering thrilling scientific and technological secrets. Best part? The ending is satisfying and well-connected — something rare in this genre.

  • Gameplay – Simple Yet Effective

Karma offers a linear gameplay experience focused on investigation and exploration. No weapons, no direct combat — but engaging with the environment and collecting clues keeps progression enjoyable. The first half includes simple puzzles, while the second introduces fun new mechanics without becoming overly complex.

Despite its simplicity, horror is ever-present. The game uses a “build-up” style for tension and delivers real psychological fear without relying on traditional jump scares. Scary moments come unexpectedly, making them more impactful.

  • Sound – The True Horror Factor

One of the game’s strongest points is its sound design. Excellent use of silence, disturbing background noises, and hidden whispers gives the constant feeling of being watched. Playing with headphones enhances this experience greatly.

Voice acting varies — some characters are excellent, others less so. Overall, sound design succeeds in delivering the game’s atmosphere. As for the music, it appears rarely but is highly effective and elevates every dramatic or scary moment it accompanies.

  • Graphics – Visual Beauty with Unreal Engine 5

The game runs on Unreal Engine 5, evident in its lighting quality, details, and designs. Though not open world, performance is excellent — reaching 150 FPS on 4K settings and outperforming many other UE5 games.

Most important is the world design: from environments representing distorted mental landscapes to insane visuals that evoke fear and psychological unease — all creatively crafted.

- Disturbing and effective sound design

- Stunning graphics and visual details
