During the fight with Kid Buu on the Sacred World of the Kai, Goku initially uses his Super Saiyan 2 to fight Kid Buu and then goes straight in powering up to Super Saiyan 3. In his Super Saiyan 2 form, the golden spiky hair brought on by earlier transformations now becomes even spikier and stands up even taller. Goku briefly displayed Super Saiyan 2 to Babidi and Majin Buu by taking the evil duo through the progression of Super Saiyan forms, Goku was able to buy some time before revealing a level even higher than that: Super Saiyan 3.
