New Resident Evil Movie Won’t Feature Leon S. Kennedy — Original Story in the Works

Director Zack Cregger has confirmed that Leon S. Kennedy — one of the most iconic characters in the Resident Evil franchise — will not appear in the new Resident Evil film. Instead, the project will present a completely original story set within the established universe.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cregger emphasized that while the film will carry his distinct directorial style, it will remain faithful to the world of Resident Evil. “Fans will not be disappointed,” he said, “everything they love about the series will still be there.”

He explained that the story will not retread previous plotlines or rehash familiar arcs. The aim is to bring a fresh narrative — something new that adds depth to the franchise’s lore while preserving its core elements.

Here are some additional details shared about the film:

Actor Paul Walter Hauser (known for Fantastic Four) has joined the cast.

The tone of the movie is said to be closer to Resident Evil 4, mixing action with horror in a way that balances both.

The plot will not retell events from the games; it will deliver something entirely new for fans of the franchise.

Interestingly, Cregger also admitted that he hasn’t watched any previous Resident Evil films, reinforcing that this will be an independent take.

Choosing to omit Leon Kennedy is a bold move, given his status among fans. While many may view this as a loss, there’s also potential: an original story could reduce dependence on nostalgia, opening up creative freedom. How this gamble will be received remains to be seen — especially by longtime followers who may expect Leon’s involvement.

If done well, the new film could set a benchmark: still Resident Evil, but not bound by the weight of past adaptations. Fans will likely watch for early trailers and story reveals to see exactly how Cregger will balance innovation with respect for tradition.
