Disc check: will we buy your used game?
Check your discs before you make the trip. A game console reads a disc with a laser. A deep scratch breaks the reading, and the game freezes for the next player. Watch how it works, test your discs at home in 30 seconds, and you'll know our answer before you leave.
Reads perfectly
The laser reads every track from the centre outwards. No breaks, no freezes.
Three tests, the same ones we do at the counter
No tools. A lamp and a fingernail are enough.
The light test
Hold the shiny side under a lamp and tilt it slowly. Scratches flash as the light passes over them. Look for any line that crosses the shiny area.
The fingernail test
Run a fingernail gently across the scratch, from the centre outwards. If your nail catches in it, the scratch is deep, and we can't buy the disc.
Centre and edge
Look at the clear ring around the hole and at the outer edge. Any crack, even a tiny one, means the disc isn't safe to spin. Sticky labels or residue on the shiny side count too.
One rule, the same in every store
This is the exact guide our staff use at the counter. No guessing, no mood, no branch-to-branch difference.
Clean, or marks you can't feel
- No line you can see across the shiny side under a lamp
- Fine dust or fingerprints (we clean those)
- The disc is the original, in its own case
A few faint marks at the very edge
- Only very light hairlines, only near the outer edge
- Your nail glides over them without catching
- The store checks it with you; if it fails, you know why on the spot
Deep, circular or cracked
- Any scratch your nail catches in
- Any scratch that reaches toward the centre
- A circle scratch (from a disc spinning loose)
- A crack, a chip or residue on the shiny side
If one store says no, every store says no
We'd rather tell you now than send you across town for a "sorry". If a store ever judges a disc differently from this guide, call 16280 and we'll sort it out.
Your disc's next owner is a gamer like you
Every pre-owned game we sell carries our name and our guarantee. If a scratched disc freezes on level three, the next buyer comes back to us, and rightly so. Buying only discs that play perfectly is how we keep pre-owned games worth buying, and worth selling.
It's still yours, and it may still play
Many scratched discs still work in your own console. We just can't promise that to someone else. Keep it, or trade the rest of your games and keep that one for yourself.
