Fighting games

What fighting games ask of you, and which are the friendliest for beginners.

Updated

Fighting games are one-on-one combat between two characters, usually on a two-dimensional plane, with each player choosing from a roster. They are simple to understand and famously deep to master.

What they actually test

Execution — performing moves reliably through specific inputs.

Spacing — controlling the distance between characters, which is where most matches are actually decided.

Reading your opponent — anticipating what a person will do, which makes the genre feel like a conversation rather than a race.

Reacting — punishing a mistake within a fraction of a second.

The reason fighting games have such dedicated communities is that the skill ceiling is extraordinarily high. Two players of equal execution can be separated entirely by reading each other.

The main styles

Traditional 2D — Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, The King of Fighters.

3D fighters — Tekken, Soulcalibur, with sidestepping and movement in depth.

Platform fighters — Super Smash Bros., where you knock opponents off a stage rather than depleting health.

Tag fighters — teams with characters you switch between.

What are the best fighting games for beginners?

Look for two things: a good tutorial and simplified control options. Several modern fighting games include a modern or simplified control scheme that performs special moves with a single button, which removes the execution barrier and lets a new player focus on the actual game.

Super Smash Bros. is the most approachable entry point overall — its controls are simpler than a traditional fighter and it works brilliantly as a party game. Among traditional fighters, recent Street Fighter and Tekken entries have invested heavily in teaching newcomers.

Practical notes

Fighting games reward local play more than almost any genre — two people on one couch is how the genre was built. They also need a low-latency setup online, since a few frames of delay genuinely change what is possible.

A controller is fine to start. Arcade sticks and pads are a preference, not a requirement, and plenty of top players use standard controllers.
