Adding storage to PS5, Xbox and Switch 2
The exact storage each console needs, and the compatibility rules that cause returns.
Every console expands differently, and the rules are strict. Buying the wrong thing is common and entirely avoidable.
Which SSDs are compatible with the PS5?
The PS5 takes an internal M.2 SSD, and Sony''s requirements are firm:
- PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe — SATA M.2 drives do not work at all.
- Sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s. This rules out Gen3 drives regardless of how good they are.
- A heatsink is mandatory, and the total height of drive plus heatsink must not exceed 11.25mm.
- M.2 2280 is the usual form factor; 2230, 2242, 2260 and 22110 also fit.
- Capacity 250GB to 8TB.
Check the drive''s official spec sheet for the read speed rather than trusting marketing wording. The simplest safe route is a drive sold with a PS5-compatible heatsink already attached.
How do I add an SSD to my PS5?
- Power down completely and unplug everything.
- Remove the side cover, then unscrew the expansion slot cover.
- Move the spacer to the position matching your drive length, insert the drive at an angle, press it flat and secure the screw.
- Replace the covers, power on, and the PS5 will prompt you to format the drive.
You only need a small Phillips screwdriver. If you would rather not open the console, bring it to a branch and we will fit it.
Can I play PS5 games from an external drive?
No. PS5 games must be on internal storage or the M.2 expansion to run — the game is built assuming SSD speed.
An external USB drive is still useful, though. You can store PS5 games on it and copy them back when you want to play, which is far faster than redownloading. And PS4 games play directly from an external drive on a PS5.
Xbox Series X|S
Xbox uses a proprietary storage expansion card that slots into the back. It is the only way to expand storage for Xbox Series games — there is no third-party alternative and no internal M.2 option.
As with PS5, an external USB drive can store Series games and play older Xbox One titles directly.
Which microSD card does Switch 2 need?
This is the one that catches people. The Switch 2 requires microSD Express — not ordinary microSD.
Your old card from the original Switch will not hold Switch 2 games. It is a different, faster standard, not a formatting issue. Look for the microSD Express logo on the packaging; the UHS and V-class ratings you are used to do not indicate Express support.
The Switch 2 has 256GB internally, and supports cards up to 2TB.
