Gaming chairs and desks

What actually matters in a chair and a desk, and why a gaming chair is often the wrong purchase.

Updated

If you sit for hours, the chair affects your experience more than most accessories — and it is the item where marketing and usefulness diverge most sharply.

The honest position on gaming chairs

Most gaming chairs are styled after racing seats. That shape was designed to hold a body in place during cornering, not to support someone sitting still for four hours. The high bolsters that look dramatic often push your shoulders forward.

At the same price, a decent office chair is usually the better purchase. Office chairs are designed by people solving the problem of sitting for long periods, which is the actual problem you have.

That said, good gaming chairs exist. Judge the chair, not the category.

What actually matters in a chair

Adjustable height, so your feet rest flat and your knees sit at roughly ninety degrees.

Lumbar support that meets the curve of your lower back. This is the single most important feature for avoiding back pain.

Adjustable armrests, so your shoulders can relax rather than being held up or dropped.

Breathable material — a real consideration in this climate. Leather-look PVC gets hot and eventually cracks; mesh and fabric breathe.

Build quality in the base and gas cylinder, which is where cheap chairs fail first.

What does not matter: the shape, the colour scheme, the brand of the team it is endorsed by.

Desk height matters more than the desk

The most common setup mistake is a desk that is too high, which forces your shoulders up for hours.

Correct position: elbows at roughly ninety degrees when your hands are on the desk, forearms parallel to the floor, and the top of the screen at or just below eye level. If your desk is too tall, raise the chair and use a footrest rather than living with it.

Depth matters more than width — you need enough distance between your eyes and the screen, ideally an arm''s length.

A sturdy plain desk at the right height beats a wobbling one with cable channels and lighting.

If the budget is tight

Spend on the chair, not the desk. A good chair on an ordinary table is far better than an expensive desk with a bad chair.

And see our guide to eye strain and posture — the free adjustments there make more difference than most purchases.
