Which gaming hardware is actually the newest right now, and what has and has not been announced.

What is the newest gaming console?
The most recent home console release is the Nintendo Switch 2, launched in June 2025. It is the newest console generation on the market.
Before that, the PlayStation 5 Pro arrived in November 2024 as a more powerful revision of the PS5 rather than a new generation.
No manufacturer has released a newer home console since. Anything described as newer than these is either a handheld PC, an accessory, or speculation.
What is the newest PlayStation?
The PS5 Pro is the newest PlayStation hardware — a more powerful GPU, better ray tracing, AI upscaling and 2TB of storage. It ships without a disc drive; the detachable drive is a separate purchase.
The current PS5 line is the Slim in digital and disc versions, with the Pro above them. The original launch model is no longer manufactured.
On a PS6: Sony has not announced one. On its May 2026 earnings call the company said no decision had been made about the timing or pricing of its next-generation platforms. There has been no reveal, no name, no date and no price. Anything circulating with a specific release date is a rumour rather than an announcement, and we will update this page if that changes.
What is the newest Nintendo console?
The Nintendo Switch 2, released June 2025. It has a 7.9-inch 1080p screen supporting up to 120Hz with HDR, outputs up to 4K at 60Hz when docked, and has 256GB of internal storage.
It plays both Switch 2 games and almost the entire original Switch library — cartridges work directly, digital games transfer through your Nintendo Account. Switch 2 exclusives do not run on the original Switch.
All three original Switch models — Switch, Switch OLED and Switch Lite — remain in production alongside it.
What about Xbox?
The newest Xbox consoles remain the Xbox Series X and Series S, released in 2020. Microsoft has not released a newer home console.
What Microsoft has done recently is push into Xbox-branded handheld PCs made with ASUS — Windows handhelds rather than consoles. They run PC games and Game Pass, but they are not a new Xbox generation, and it is worth being clear about that distinction if you see them described as "the new Xbox".
Should you wait?
For PlayStation, there is nothing announced to wait for. The PS5 has a long software life ahead of it, so if you want to play in the next couple of years, buying now is reasonable.
For Nintendo, the Switch 2 is current and early in its life.
For Xbox, the Series X and S are older, so it is worth weighing that against how long you intend to keep the console.
