Which PS5 should you buy?
The current PS5 models compared — Slim Digital, Slim with disc drive, and PS5 Pro — and which fits which buyer.
Sony currently sells the PS5 Slim in two configurations and the PS5 Pro above them. The original launch model is no longer manufactured and now only exists used.
The models
PS5 Slim Digital Edition — no disc drive, 825GB of storage. The cheapest way into the platform. A detachable disc drive can be added separately later on this model.
PS5 Slim with disc drive — the same console with the drive included and 1TB of storage. More storage and physical game support for a modest step up.
PS5 Pro — a more powerful GPU, better ray-tracing performance, AI-based upscaling, and 2TB of storage. It ships without a disc drive; the detachable drive is bought separately if you want one.
The Slim and the original PS5 perform identically. Upgrading from a launch model to a Slim buys you a smaller case and a little more storage, not more speed.
Disc or digital — decide this first
This choice is harder to reverse than the performance one, so make it deliberately.
A disc drive gives you used games, the ability to sell games when you finish them, lending to friends, and installing from disc rather than downloading everything. At Games 2 Egypt that matters concretely: we buy selected used games back in cash, and within 10 days of purchase we will buy a game back regardless of stock needs, at a better value, provided it is in excellent condition. Digital games cannot be sold back at all.
Digital-only makes sense if you buy mainly in store sales, never resell, and have a connection that handles large downloads comfortably.
Since the Digital Edition can take a detachable drive later, going digital is not permanently final on that model — but the drive costs money, so factor that in rather than treating it as free.
Is storage a reason to pay more?
Usually not. Modern games are large, and 825GB fills quickly — but an internal SSD upgrade or an external drive is generally cheaper than the gap between models. Choose the model for the disc drive and the performance, then solve storage separately.
Who should buy which
Slim Digital — first console, lowest entry price, you buy digitally anyway and do not resell.
Slim with disc drive — the sensible default for most buyers. Physical games, used games, resale value, and more storage out of the box.
PS5 Pro — worth it only if you have a 4K screen capable of showing the difference, you care about ray tracing and image quality, and you play the kinds of games that receive Pro patches. On a 1080p television, the Pro is money spent on something your screen cannot display.
Should you wait for the next console?
Sony has not announced a PS6. On its May 2026 earnings call the company said no decision had been made on the timing or pricing of its next-generation platforms. Anything circulating with a specific date is a rumour, not an announcement.
So if you want to play in the next couple of years, buying now is reasonable — the PS5 has a long software life ahead of it either way. We will update this page when Sony announces something official.
