October 26 is a remarkable date for Rockstar fans, and the Rockstar Games anniversary connection makes it even better. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas turns 22 today, while Red Dead Redemption 2 celebrates eight years. Exactly 14 years separate their original releases, yet both gave us protagonists who became central to conversations about video game storytelling. One took us through the streets of San Andreas; the other into the fading American frontier.
Rockstar Games Anniversary Timeline
- 26 October 2004 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas CJ's adventure begins with his return to Los Santos and a fight to protect his family.
- 26 October 2018 Red Dead Redemption 2 Arthur Morgan's story begins amid the struggles of the Van der Linde gang.
- 26 October 2026 A Shared Anniversary Two landmark releases are celebrated on the same day.
CJ and Arthur Compared
Carl CJ Johnson
CJ returns to Los Santos after tragedy strikes his family. Corrupt police officers and conflicts involving local gangs force him into a journey across San Andreas. His story combines personal loyalty, survival and the struggle to regain control of his life.
Arthur Morgan
Arthur belongs to the Van der Linde gang, whose members are forced to flee after a failed robbery in Blackwater. As pressure grows and the group begins to fracture, he faces difficult choices between loyalty and his own principles.
The contrast between these protagonists is exactly what makes the shared anniversary so interesting. CJ comes home to a city overwhelmed by corruption and conflict, while Arthur is trying to survive with a gang whose future looks increasingly uncertain. Their worlds could hardly be more different. But both stories put relationships, personal choices and the consequences of violence at their center, rather than treating the open world as the whole attraction.
Two Worlds Different Approaches
| Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | Red Dead Redemption 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Protagonist | Carl CJ Johnson | Arthur Morgan |
| Setting | San Andreas in the early 1990s | America in 1899 |
| Central conflict | Family and street conflicts | Gang loyalty and survival |
| Atmosphere | Urban crime drama | Western outlaw drama |
- San Andreas A journey across a fictional state, starting in Los Santos and expanding into different locations and communities.
- Grove Street Connections CJ's family and childhood relationships give his return an intensely personal purpose.
- The Van der Linde Gang Arthur's loyalty to the people around him shapes the emotional weight of his journey.
- The End of an Era Red Dead Redemption 2 explores a changing America where the outlaw lifestyle is becoming harder to sustain.
I find this comparison difficult in the best way. CJ represents an unforgettable part of growing up with games, while Arthur's story hits differently when you experience it with more patience.
Of course, nostalgia can make a comparison unfair. San Andreas belongs to an earlier generation of open-world design, whereas Red Dead Redemption 2 places much greater emphasis on cinematic presentation and deliberate pacing. Neither approach needs to defeat the other. For me, the point of this anniversary isn't deciding which game wins; it's recognizing how Rockstar created two distinctive experiences with different storytelling ambitions.
Two games, one anniversary, and characters whose stories still deserve another visit.
Revisiting Both Classics
Choose Your Anniversary Adventure
- Return to Los Santos Revisit CJ's opening journey and the people who made Grove Street memorable.
- Ride With Arthur Explore the Van der Linde gang's story and pay attention to how relationships change under pressure.
- Compare the Storytelling Notice how Rockstar uses freedom, atmosphere and character development differently in both games.

San Andreas is an urban crime adventure focused on CJ, while Red Dead Redemption 2 is a Western drama exploring loyalty and the end of the outlaw era.
Few calendar dates offer a better excuse to revisit two completely different Rockstar adventures. CJ's struggle through San Andreas and Arthur Morgan's journey across the frontier remind us that memorable games are built around more than maps and missions. It's the characters, their decisions and the moments we carry with us afterward. Fourteen years apart, these stories arrived on the same date. That's one anniversary worth celebrating twice.
