Region-free and region lock

Region free means a product works regardless of which country it was sold in. Region locked means it only works within the region it was made for. The confusion comes from the fact that the answer is different for discs and for digital codes.

Game discs are region free

On PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and X, and Nintendo Switch, game discs and cartridges are region free. A disc bought in the UK, the UAE or Egypt will play on your console here. This has been true across the current and previous console generation, and it is why importing a physical copy is generally safe.

What can still differ between copies is the language and the age rating printed on the box. A copy made for one market may not include Arabic, even though it runs perfectly. That is a packaging difference, not a region lock.

Digital codes are region locked

This is where it matters. Gift cards, wallet top-ups, subscription codes and digital game codes are tied to the region of the store they were issued for. A UAE PlayStation card only redeems on a UAE account; a US card only on a US account. Account regions are set when the account is created and cannot be changed, and credit cannot be moved between accounts. The same principle applies to Xbox and Nintendo eShop codes.

So the practical rule is simple: discs travel, codes do not. Before buying any digital card, check which region your account is registered to and buy the matching card.

What about movies and DVDs?

Blu-ray and DVD movies are a separate system with their own region codes, and those are still enforced. A Blu-ray film is not covered by the console region-free rule that applies to games.
