SSD vs HDD
The difference between solid-state and mechanical drives, and why it changed console gaming.
An HDD (hard disk drive) stores data on spinning magnetic platters read by a moving arm. An SSD (solid-state drive) uses flash memory with no moving parts at all.
The practical difference is speed, and it is not a small one. An SSD reads data many times faster than a mechanical drive, and — more importantly for games — it has almost no seek time, meaning it can jump to any piece of data instantly rather than waiting for a platter to rotate into position.
Why do games load faster on an SSD?
Loading a game level is not one big read. It is thousands of small reads scattered across the drive — textures here, audio there, geometry somewhere else. A mechanical drive has to physically move its arm for each one, and that waiting dominates the load time.
An SSD has nowhere to move. Every read is immediate, which is why load times collapse from a minute to a few seconds rather than merely improving.
What it changed on consoles
The current console generation made SSDs standard, and it changed more than waiting time. Because games can now stream data fast enough as you move, developers no longer need corridors, lifts and squeeze-through-gaps to hide loading. Fast travel that once took a minute is now nearly instant.
This is also why a PS5 game will not run from an external mechanical drive: the game is built assuming SSD speed. You can store PS5 games on an external HDD and copy them back when you want to play, which is useful and much faster than re-downloading — but PS4 games can be played directly from it.
Buying advice
If you are adding storage to a current console, you need an internal NVMe SSD meeting the console''s speed requirements — not any SSD. Check the specification before buying, and check whether your model needs a heatsink.
For a gaming PC, an SSD is not optional. Put the operating system and the games you actually play on it; a large mechanical drive is still fine for storing things you are not currently playing.
