GOTY edition

A Game of the Year edition — often shortened to GOTY, and sometimes called Complete, Definitive, Ultimate or Enhanced — is a re-release that bundles the base game with the content published for it since launch. It usually appears a year or two after the original release.

The name refers to awards the game won, but the awards are marketing. What matters is the contents.

What is normally included

• The base game, fully patched.
• Most or all of the DLC and expansions released since launch.
• Sometimes technical improvements — better performance, a current-generation version, occasionally improved visuals.

The word "most" matters. Not every GOTY edition includes everything, and some exclude later expansions released after the edition was assembled. Check the contents list rather than assuming the name covers it all.

Why it is usually the better buy

For an older game, a GOTY edition is frequently cheaper than the base game was at launch, while containing considerably more. You also get the game in its finished state — patched, balanced and with the content the developer added after learning how people actually played it.

There is a genuine argument that many games are best played in this form rather than at release.

Two things to watch

Check what it actually contains. Different regions and editions sometimes bundle different things under similar names. The store page or the back of the box lists it.

Check whether you already own part of it. If you own the base game and are buying the GOTY edition for the DLC, buying the DLC separately may be cheaper than buying the whole bundle again.

Practical advice

If a game is more than about a year old and you have not played it, look for a Complete or GOTY edition before buying the standard one. It is one of the easiest ways to get more for less, and it is routinely overlooked because people search for the game by its original name.
