Why console downloads are slow, and how to speed them up
The real reasons a console downloads far slower than your subscription, and what actually helps.
A 100 Mbps line downloading a game at 5 Mbps is a common and fixable complaint. Here is what is actually happening.
Why it is slower than your subscription
Server distance. Game platforms serve downloads from data centres that may be far away. That alone caps your speed regardless of your line.
Wi-Fi loss. Consoles often sit far from the router, behind walls, in a TV cabinet. The metal and the distance both cost you.
Other devices. Anyone streaming video in the house takes a share.
Peak hours. Evening congestion is real and affects everyone on your exchange.
The console is doing something else — installing, updating another game, or running a game in the background.
What actually speeds it up
1. Use a cable. Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi is the single biggest improvement for most people, often several times faster. If you do nothing else, do this.
2. Pause everything else. One download at a time. Consoles queue several at once and split the bandwidth between them.
3. Close the game. On PlayStation and Xbox, downloading while a game is running is dramatically slower. Quit to the dashboard and watch the speed climb.
4. Use rest mode. Consoles download faster with nothing else running. Enable downloading in rest mode and leave it overnight.
5. Download at night. Off-peak hours genuinely make a large difference.
6. Restart the router. Simple, and it fixes more than it should.
What usually does not help
Changing DNS. It can help slightly in some cases, but it is frequently recommended as a cure-all and rarely is one. Try it, but do not expect much.
Upgrading your package. If the bottleneck is Wi-Fi or server distance, a faster line changes nothing.
Port forwarding. Does nothing at all for download speed. See port forwarding explained.
How to know whether it is your line
Test a phone on Wi-Fi next to the console and run a normal speed test. If the phone is also slow there, it is coverage or the line. If the phone is fast and the console is slow, it is the console''s connection — try the cable.

A realistic expectation
Large modern games are 100GB and up. Even on a good connection that takes time, and on a shared household line in the evening it can take a night. Starting the download before you go to bed is not a workaround — it is the normal way to do it.
