GTA 6 New Details Reveal Hurricanes, 170+ Animal Species, and Major NPC Improvements

New details about Grand Theft Auto VI have revealed just how far Rockstar Games is pushing environmental simulation and world-building in Leonida, with major upgrades covering dynamic weather, wildlife, wind physics, and the appearance of NPCs.

The information comes from Game Informer’s latest GTA 6 coverage, which includes direct details from Rockstar developers about the systems powering the game's open world.

A Completely Rebuilt Weather System

One of the biggest upgrades is GTA 6’s weather system, which has reportedly been rebuilt to feel more localized and persistent.

Different regions of Leonida can experience different weather conditions at the same time, while fully dynamic clouds move across the map and evolve from clear skies into large storm formations.

Rockstar has also confirmed that tropical storms and hurricanes can occur across Leonida.

During severe storms, players can expect heavy rain, strong winds, dense cloud formations, thunder, and lightning. Water will also visibly pour from rooftops and other structures, making streets and environments appear heavily soaked during extreme conditions.

Wind Will Have a Physical Impact on the World

Weather will not simply be a visual effect.

The new wind simulation can reproduce sea breezes after sunset, convection-driven updrafts, and the way buildings block or redirect airflow.

Strong gusts can move hair and loose debris, create ripples across water, and bend grass in swamp areas, helping make the world feel far more reactive than previous Grand Theft Auto games.

More Than 170 Animal Species

Wildlife is another area receiving a major expansion.

Rockstar has confirmed that more than 170 animal species will inhabit Leonida, including over 60 types of birds and more than 30 land mammals, alongside fish, reptiles, and marine creatures.

Confirmed animals include alligators, manatees, flamingos, and pelicans, while the oceans will also contain creatures such as sharks, whales, rays, turtles, and jellyfish.

Several species native to Leonida's Florida-inspired ecosystem have also never appeared in a Rockstar game before.

Rockstar is additionally building on technology previously used in Red Dead Redemption, with more advanced fur, feather, translucency, and even bioluminescence effects for different creatures.

NPCs Will Look More Diverse Than Ever

Rockstar is also putting significant effort into making Leonida's population feel more varied.

NPCs will differ in height and body shape, with more detailed variations in muscle mass and weight distribution across different areas of the body.

Character skin will also include details such as freckles, moles, and sun tanning, while Rockstar has reportedly designed tattoos to better reflect the culture and region of individual characters.

Hair styles and body grooming will also vary more extensively, helping different communities and cultures across Leonida feel visually distinct.

Rockstar Is Focusing on Density, Not Just Map Size

The latest details suggest that Rockstar's ambition for GTA 6 goes well beyond simply creating a larger map.

The studio appears focused on making Leonida feel reactive and believable on a smaller scale, from storms changing the environment to wildlife behaving differently across regions and NPCs displaying far greater physical variety.

With more than 170 animal species, advanced wind and storm simulation, and an unprecedented level of detail in the population, GTA 6 is shaping up to be Rockstar's most ambitious open world yet.

The game is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
