Console running slowly, freezing or crashing

A console that has become slow or unstable over time usually has one of four causes, and three of them are free to fix.

1. Heat

The clearest sign is timing: if it runs fine for twenty minutes and then stutters, freezes or shuts down, that is heat rather than software.

Check the fan noise and the air from the rear. Move it out of any enclosed space, clear 10cm on every side, and clean the external vents with short bursts of compressed air. See overheating for the full guide — including why an older console needs internal cleaning that you cannot do from outside.

2. Corrupted system data

The single most effective maintenance step, and it deletes nothing:

PS5 and PS4: Safe Mode → Rebuild Database. Hold the power button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB.

Xbox: hold the console power button for ten seconds for a full power cycle, then restart.

Switch: hold power for 12 seconds, then restart.

Do this before anything more drastic. It resolves a large share of "my console is dying" cases.

3. Storage nearly full

A drive with very little free space slows down noticeably, because the system has no room to work. Keep some headroom free rather than filling it to the last gigabyte.

4. Failing storage

If crashes continue after a rebuild, across many different games, and installs also fail, the drive may be failing. Signs: long loading times that keep getting worse, games that will not install, and repeated data corruption.

This one is a repair rather than a setting — and it is the reason to back up your saves now rather than later.

Routine maintenance worth doing

• Restart fully once a week rather than leaving it in rest mode indefinitely. Rest mode is convenient and it lets small problems accumulate.
• Keep the system software updated.
• Clean the vents every few months, more often in summer.
• Leave storage headroom.
• Back up saves periodically.

Those five keep a console healthy for years, and the first one alone prevents a surprising number of problems.

If it still fails

If nothing above works, the console needs inspection. We repair consoles and accessories at all our branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days, and everything is tested before it goes back to you. If it is still under warranty, bring it in rather than opening it — an unauthorised repair attempt voids the cover.
