PS5 overheating, fan noise and sudden shutdowns

Consoles are designed to run warm. The problem starts when they cannot get rid of that heat, and in a hot summer that happens far more easily than the manuals assume.

Warning signs

• The fan becomes loud, then very loud.
• The console shuts down on its own during play, usually in demanding games.
• A temperature warning appears on screen.
• The air from the rear vents is hot rather than warm.

A sudden shutdown mid-game is the clearest sign, and it is the console protecting itself rather than breaking.

What causes it

Enclosed spaces. A closed TV cabinet is the most common cause by a wide margin. The console reheats the same air.

Dust. Dust collects in the vents and on the internal heatsink and insulates exactly what needs to stay cool. In a dusty climate this happens faster than manufacturers plan for.

Room temperature. A console in a 38°C room has far less margin than one in an air-conditioned room. Summer here is genuinely harder on hardware.

Position. Vents blocked by a wall, a shelf or another device.

What to do

1. Give it air. At least 10cm clear on every side, and never in a closed cabinet. If it must live in furniture, leave the door open while playing.

2. Keep it off carpet and off soft surfaces that block the underside.

3. Clean the vents. Short bursts of compressed air into the external vents, can held upright. Do not open the console to clean inside — that voids the warranty, and there are components inside that are easily damaged.

4. Play in the coolest room you have, and use a fan or air conditioning in summer if the console has been shutting down.

5. Stand it vertically or horizontally — both are fine, but make sure the vents are clear either way.

Internal cleaning

Consoles more than a couple of years old accumulate dust inside that external cleaning cannot reach, and this is the single most common cause of worsening fan noise. It needs proper opening and cleaning, including reapplying thermal paste in some cases.

This is a service we do. Bring it to any branch except Alexandria — usually one to three days, and tested before it goes back to you. Opening it yourself while in warranty voids the cover, so bring it in instead.

One thing not to do

Do not put a household fan blowing directly into the vents as a permanent fix, and never use a vacuum cleaner on them — static and suction can damage internal components. Compressed air only.
