PS5 controller will not connect or is drifting
How to re-pair a DualSense, fix connection drops, and what to do about stick drift.
Two separate problems with two separate answers. Work out which one you have first.
Controller will not connect
1. Connect it with a USB cable and press the PS button. If it works wired, the controller is fine and this is a pairing problem.
2. Reset the controller. There is a small hole on the back near the top screw. Press inside it with a straightened paperclip for about five seconds. This is the fix most people never find, and it resolves a large share of cases.
3. Re-pair it. After resetting, connect by USB, press PS, and it pairs again.
4. Restart the console fully — a complete power-down, not rest mode.
5. Check the cable. Many USB-C cables are charge-only and carry no data. Use the cable that came with the console, or another known data cable.
6. Update the controller firmware from the console settings once connected.
Controller keeps disconnecting
Usually interference or battery. Move closer to the console, remove obstructions, and check whether it happens only at low battery. A battery that no longer holds charge is a repairable fault.
Stick drift
The character moves on its own without you touching the stick. This is wear on the contacts inside the stick module and dust getting underneath — see stick drift explained.
What to try:
Clean around the base of the stick with short bursts of compressed air, moving the stick through its full range as you go. Then reset the controller with the paperclip.
If the drift returns after cleaning, the module is physically worn and no setting will hold it. That needs the stick module replaced — a repair, not an adjustment.
Getting it repaired

If the controller is still under warranty, bring it in rather than opening it — an unauthorised repair attempt voids the cover. Pre-owned controllers bought from us carry a one-month warranty.
