PS5 shows no signal on the TV

What to check when the console is on but the screen stays black.

Updated

If the console light is on, the console is working. This is a signal problem between it and the television, and it is usually fixed without any repair.

Quick checks first

1. Correct input. Make sure the TV is on the same HDMI input the console is plugged into. Obvious, and regularly the answer.

2. Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable. Firmly, at the console and the TV.

3. Try a different HDMI port on the television.

4. Try a different cable. Use the one that came with the console — it is the correct Ultra High Speed type. An older cable can work at lower settings and fail at 4K 120Hz, often with a black or flickering screen rather than an error.

5. Power cycle both. Turn the TV and console fully off, unplug both for a minute, and start the TV first, then the console.

If it still shows nothing

Use Safe Mode to force a compatible video mode:

  1. Turn the console off completely.
  2. Hold the power button until the second beep (about seven seconds).
  3. Connect the controller by USB cable and press PS.
  4. Choose Change Video Output, then Change Resolution.

The console restarts and steps through resolutions until the TV displays one. This solves most cases where a console was set to an output the television cannot handle.

Common causes worth knowing

A receiver or soundbar in the middle. If the console goes through an older receiver, it may not pass 4K 120Hz or HDR. Connect the console directly to the TV to test.

HDMI bandwidth disabled. Most televisions ship with full HDMI bandwidth off for each port — called HDMI Deep Color, UHD Color, Input Signal Plus or Enhanced Format. Without it, higher modes produce no picture. See best TV settings for PS5.

A damaged HDMI port on the console — usually from a cable being knocked while connected. If no cable, port or TV works and Safe Mode cannot produce a picture, this is likely, and it is a repair.

Bring it in

If Safe Mode gives no picture on any television with a known good cable, the port or board needs inspection. All branches except Alexandria, usually one to three days, tested before return. Call 16280.
