PS4 error CE-34878-0 — what it means and how to fix it

Sony''s message: An error has occurred with the application.

This is by far the most common PS4 error. It means a game closed unexpectedly. It is usually a software problem rather than a failing console, and it appears more often after a sudden power cut, because an interrupted write can leave game data damaged.

Fixes, in order

1. Restart the game. If it happened once, that is often the end of it.

2. Update the game and the system software. Many crashes are fixed by patches, and an outdated console crashes on newer games.

3. Close other applications. Running a game while something else is open leaves less memory for it.

4. Rebuild the database. This resolves most persistent cases and does not delete games or saves:

• Turn the console off completely, not rest mode.
• Hold the power button until you hear a second beep (about seven seconds). The console starts in Safe Mode.
• Connect the controller with a USB cable and press PS.
• Choose Rebuild Database and wait.

5. Delete and reinstall the game if only one title is affected. Saves are stored separately and are not lost.

6. Check for overheating. If crashes come after twenty or thirty minutes of play and the fan is loud, this is heat rather than software. See PS4 overheating.

Reading the pattern

One game only → that game''s data. Reinstall it.

Every game → system level. Rebuild the database.

Always after a while of playing → heat.

Started after a power cut → corrupted data. Rebuild the database.

Crashes continue after a rebuild and a reinstall → the hard drive may be failing.

If it still fails
