PS4 overheating and loud fan
Why older PS4s get loud and hot, and what actually fixes it.
A loud PS4 is the most common complaint about the console, and on an older machine it is almost always dust rather than a fault.
Signs
- The fan becomes loud enough to hear over the game.
- The console shuts down during play, often in the same demanding games.
- Air from the rear is hot rather than warm.
- Crashes appear after twenty or thirty minutes rather than immediately.
That last pattern is the giveaway: a fault that only appears after a while of playing is heat, not software.
What to do
1. Give it air. 10cm clear on every side, never in a closed cabinet, never on carpet.
2. Move it out of direct sun and away from other hot equipment.
3. Clean the external vents with short bursts of compressed air, can held upright. Never use a vacuum cleaner — suction and static can damage components.
4. Play in the coolest room available and use a fan or air conditioning in summer. A console in a 38°C room has very little thermal margin.
5. Keep it horizontal unless it has a proper vertical stand.
The real fix for an older console
After a few years, dust builds up inside on the heatsink where external cleaning cannot reach, and the thermal paste dries out. That is what makes a PS4 progressively louder, and no amount of external cleaning will fix it.
It needs proper internal cleaning and, usually, fresh thermal paste. Doing this yourself means opening the console — which voids the warranty and risks damage to the ribbon cables inside.
