PS4 disc not reading or ejecting by itself

Two distinct problems get confused here: discs that will not read, and discs the console spits out on its own. The second has a specific and well-known cause.

First: is it the disc or the console?

Try another disc.

Other discs work → the first disc is the problem. Clean it with a soft dry cloth, wiping from the centre outwards, never in circles. Check for deep scratches.

No disc works → the drive. Continue below.

Discs not reading

1. Power cycle. Full shutdown, power cable out for a minute, back in.

2. Update the system software.

3. Rebuild the database in Safe Mode.

4. Check the console is level and not tilted or enclosed.

5. Listen. Grinding or repeated clicking while loading means a mechanical fault in the drive, and further attempts risk scratching discs.

Discs ejecting on their own

This is usually one of two things:

The eject button is stuck — on some PS4 models the button can be triggered by pressure, heat or dust, and the console reads it as a continuous press. If the console beeps repeatedly and ejects any disc within seconds, this is the likely cause.

The console is sitting where something touches the button, or is standing vertically without its stand.

A quick test: stand the console differently, or lay it flat, and see whether the behaviour stops. It sounds unlikely and it is frequently the answer.

A disc stuck inside

There is a manual eject screw on the underside of the console. It works, but reaching it means removing a panel, and doing that on a console under warranty voids the cover. If the console is still covered, bring it to us instead — this is a quick job.

If it still fails

If nothing above works, the console needs inspection. We repair consoles at all our branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days, and everything is tested before it goes back to you. If it is still under warranty, bring it in rather than opening it — an unauthorised repair attempt voids the cover.
