PS4 blue light, or will not turn on
What the blue light actually means, and the steps that fix most no-start cases.
On a working PS4 the light pulses blue for a moment and then turns white. If it stays blue and never turns white — often with no picture and then a shutdown — the console is failing partway through starting up.
The name it is known by online sounds fatal. It frequently is not.
Steps, in order
1. Check the HDMI cable and port. A loose or damaged HDMI connection is a genuine cause of this symptom, not just of a blank screen. Reseat both ends, try another cable and another TV port.
2. Power cycle properly. Hold the power button until the console turns off, unplug the power cable for a full minute, then plug in and start.
3. Remove everything external — USB drives, cameras, discs — and try again. A faulty USB device can stop the console starting.
4. Try Safe Mode. Hold power until the second beep, connect the controller by USB, press PS. If Safe Mode appears, the console is largely alive:
- Try Restart PS4 first.
- Then Rebuild Database — safe, keeps games and saves.
- If there is no picture at all, choose Change Resolution to force a compatible output.
5. Check the hard drive. A loose or failing internal drive is a common cause on older consoles. If the drive was recently replaced or the console was knocked, this is a strong candidate.
6. Let it cool. If the console is hot, leave it an hour in an open space and try again. Overheating can prevent a clean start.
What it usually turns out to be
In order of how often we see it: HDMI connection, corrupted system data, a failing hard drive, overheating, then the power supply.
The first two are free to fix at home. The rest need opening the console, which is not something to attempt while it is under warranty.
If it still fails
If nothing above works, the console needs inspection. We repair consoles at all our branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days, and everything is tested before it goes back to you. If it is still under warranty, bring it in rather than opening it — an unauthorised repair attempt voids the cover.
