PS4 error SU-42118-6 — system update failed

When a PS4 system update will not install, and how to install it from a USB drive instead.

Sony''s message: There was an issue when updating your PS4 system software.

The update file is damaged or the download was interrupted. It is one of the more alarming-looking errors and one of the more reliably fixable.

Fixes, in order

1. Try the update again. A simple retry works surprisingly often.

2. Restart the console fully and retry.

3. Use a cable instead of Wi-Fi. An unstable connection during a system update is the usual cause. This alone fixes many cases.

4. Delete the update file through Notifications → Downloads, then download it again from the start. A damaged partial file will keep failing however many times you resume.

5. Install from a USB drive. This bypasses the console''s download entirely and is the reliable fix when the console cannot update itself.

Installing the update from USB

  1. Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
  2. Create a folder named PS4, and inside it a folder named UPDATE — both in capitals.
  3. Download the PS4 system update file from PlayStation''s official support site and save it into that UPDATE folder. Keep the file name exactly as downloaded.
  4. Turn the console off completely, plug in the drive.
  5. Hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
  6. Connect the controller by USB and choose Update System Software, then update from USB.

Two things people get wrong: downloading the wrong file (there is a separate, much larger reinstallation file — you want the normal update unless you are reinstalling), and using folder names in lower case.

If Safe Mode cannot see the drive

Try a different USB drive, and make sure it is formatted FAT32. Some large drives and USB 3 sticks are not recognised.

If it still fails

If nothing above works, the console needs inspection. We repair consoles at all our branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days, and everything is tested before it goes back to you. If it is still under warranty, bring it in rather than opening it — an unauthorised repair attempt voids the cover.
