Xbox will not turn on
The power-supply reset that fixes most Xbox no-power cases, plus what else to check.
Xbox consoles have one specific fix for this that works far more often than people expect, and it takes two minutes.
Start with the power reset
- Unplug the power cable from the back of the console.
- Wait a full ten seconds. This matters — it lets the internal power supply reset.
- Plug it back in firmly.
- Press the power button on the console itself, not the controller.
This resolves a large share of no-power cases on Xbox. If it worked, nothing is broken.
If that did not work
1. Test the wall socket with another device.
2. Try a different power cable if you have one.
3. Press the console button, not the controller. A controller that will not wake the console makes a working console look dead.
4. Remove external drives and discs and try again.
5. Check for overheating. If it was hot, or is in a closed cabinet, let it cool for an hour in open air and retry.
If it turns on but shows nothing
That is a display problem, not a power one. Hold the power button for ten seconds to force a full shutdown, then hold power + eject together when starting to force a low-resolution display mode. On an all-digital console with no eject button, hold power and the bind button.
Then check the HDMI cable, the TV input, and the port.
If the light blinks or it powers off immediately
That points at the power supply or the internal board. On older models the power brick is a common failure point and is replaceable.
If it still fails
If nothing above works, the console needs inspection. We repair consoles at all our branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days, and everything is tested before it goes back to you. If it is still under warranty, bring it in rather than opening it — an unauthorised repair attempt voids the cover.
