Xbox controller will not connect
How to re-pair an Xbox controller and fix disconnections.
Most Xbox controller problems are pairing or batteries, and both are quick to rule out.
Steps, in order
1. Check the batteries first. Xbox controllers use AA batteries or a rechargeable pack, and a weak battery causes exactly the symptoms people blame on pairing — connecting then dropping, or not connecting at all. Fit fresh batteries before anything else.
2. Connect it with a USB cable. If it works wired, the controller is fine and this is a wireless problem. Make sure the cable carries data — many charging cables do not.
3. Re-pair it:
- Turn the console on.
- Press and hold the bind button on the console for a few seconds.
- Hold the bind button on the top edge of the controller until the Xbox light flashes quickly.
- When it stops flashing and stays lit, it is paired.
4. Restart the console fully — hold the console power button for ten seconds, then start it again.
5. Update the controller firmware from the console''s accessories settings once connected by cable.
If it keeps disconnecting
Check the distance and obstructions, and how many controllers are connected — Xbox supports a limited number at once. Interference from other wireless devices is also worth ruling out by moving closer.
Stick drift
If the character moves without input, that is worn contacts inside the stick module and dust underneath — see stick drift explained. Clean around the base with short bursts of compressed air. If it returns, the module is worn and needs replacing.
