Nintendo Switch will not charge or turn on

The hard reset that revives most dead Switches, and what to check if it does not.

A Switch that shows nothing at all is usually a drained battery in a deep state, not a broken console. There is a specific sequence that revives most of them.

The hard reset — try this first

  1. Hold the power button for 12 seconds to force a full shutdown. The screen stays black; that is expected.
  2. Plug in the official charger directly to the console, not through the dock.
  3. Leave it charging for at least 30 minutes without touching it. A deeply drained battery shows no sign of life for a long time.
  4. Press the power button once.

This revives the large majority of Switches that appear dead. The two parts people skip are the full 12 seconds and the 30 minutes of waiting.

If it still shows nothing

1. Use the official charger. The Switch is unusually particular about power delivery, and many third-party USB-C chargers either charge very slowly or not at all. This is a genuine hardware quirk, not a marketing line.

2. Check the USB-C port for debris. Lint and dust collect in it, especially on a console carried in a bag. Look into it with a light. If there is debris, compressed air in short bursts — never a metal pin.

3. Try a different cable and socket.

4. Check the charging light. If no light appears at all when plugged in, the port or battery is the likely fault.

If it charges but will not turn on

Do the 12-second hold again with the charger connected, then press power. If the screen backlight comes on faintly in a dark room but shows nothing, that is a screen or ribbon fault rather than power.

Battery life getting worse

Batteries wear with age and are replaceable. If your Switch holds charge for a fraction of what it used to, that is expected wear after a few years rather than a fault.

If it still fails

If nothing above works, the console needs inspection. We repair consoles at all our branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days, and everything is tested before it goes back to you. If it is still under warranty, bring it in rather than opening it — an unauthorised repair attempt voids the cover.
