Nintendo Switch dock shows no picture on the TV
The cable order that fixes most dock problems, and what to check next.
Dock problems are usually cabling or a power issue, and there is a specific order that fixes most of them.
The order matters
Open the back cover of the dock and connect in this order:
- AC adapter into the top port.
- HDMI cable into the bottom port.
- Close the cover, connect HDMI to the TV.
- Set the TV to the correct HDMI input first.
- Place the Switch into the dock. A green light should appear on the dock.
Two common mistakes: the cables in the wrong ports, and using a third-party charger. The dock needs the official Switch AC adapter — most USB-C chargers cannot supply what docked mode requires, and this is the single most frequent cause.
If there is still no picture
1. Reset the whole chain. Unplug the dock''s power and HDMI, unplug the TV from the wall for 30 seconds, plug everything back in the order above.
2. Hard reset the console. Hold power for 12 seconds, then dock it again.
3. Try a different HDMI port on the TV, and a different HDMI cable.
4. Check the TV resolution setting on the console — System Settings, TV Output. If it was set to a mode your TV cannot display, you get a black screen.
5. Test the console undocked. If the screen works in handheld mode, the console is fine and the fault is the dock or cables.
If the dock light does not come on
No green light on the dock when the console is inserted means it is not receiving power. Check the AC adapter is the official one, is fully seated, and that the socket works.
A known weak point
The USB-C connector inside the dock can wear or bend over time, especially if the console is inserted at an angle. If the picture appears only when you hold the console at a certain angle in the dock, that connector is the problem — and it is a repair rather than a setting.
If it still fails
If nothing above works, the console needs inspection. We repair consoles at all our branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days, and everything is tested before it goes back to you. If it is still under warranty, bring it in rather than opening it — an unauthorised repair attempt voids the cover.
