Nintendo Switch will not connect to Wi-Fi
Why the Switch struggles with some routers, and the settings that fix it.
The Switch is more sensitive to router settings than other consoles, and most connection failures come down to a handful of causes.
Quick fixes first
1. Hard reset. Hold power for 12 seconds, then start again.
2. Restart the router. Unplug for 30 seconds.
3. Delete the network and re-add it. System Settings, Internet, Internet Settings, select the network, Delete, then connect again fresh. Saved settings can become corrupted.
4. Move closer to the router. The Switch has a weaker antenna than a console that sits still, and it loses signal earlier.
The two router causes worth knowing
The 5GHz band. The original Switch supports it, but connections are often more reliable on 2.4GHz — which reaches further and through walls better. If your router broadcasts both under one name, try separating them and connecting to 2.4GHz specifically.
The security type. Some routers default to a mixed or newer security mode the Switch handles poorly. WPA2-PSK (AES) is the most reliable setting for it.
Manual DNS
If the Switch connects but cannot reach the internet, or tests fail at the final step, setting DNS manually often resolves it:
- System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings.
- Select your network → Change Settings → DNS Settings → Manual.
- Enter a public DNS pair, then test the connection.
If downloads are very slow
Switch downloads are slower than other consoles by nature, and much slower in handheld mode than docked. Dock it, close all software, and let it download with the console idle — downloads run considerably faster when nothing else is running.
The Switch 2 dock also has a wired Ethernet port, which removes Wi-Fi from the equation entirely and is the best fix available if you have one.
If nothing works
Test whether other devices connect to the same network. If only the Switch fails on every network including a phone hotspot, the console''s wireless hardware needs inspection.
If it still fails
If nothing above works, the console needs inspection. We repair consoles at all our branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days, and everything is tested before it goes back to you.
