How to create a PSN account

A PlayStation Network account is free and takes a few minutes. It is what holds your games, your wallet, your trophies and your online play. Two decisions inside the process are worth slowing down for — the region and the security settings — because one of them cannot be undone and the other protects everything you will spend.

Decide the region first

The country you select during sign-up becomes your account region permanently. It determines which store you see, which currency you are billed in, and which gift cards will redeem on the account. Sony does not offer a way to change it later.

So choose it before you start, not while a form is in front of you. If you plan to buy cards from us in a particular region, create the account in that region.

Creating the account

You can sign up on a PS5, a PS4, the PlayStation App or at playstation.com. The steps are the same everywhere:

1. Select Create Account (on a console: Settings, then Users and Accounts, then Add User).
2. Choose your country or region and language. This is the permanent choice.
3. Enter your date of birth. It must be accurate — it sets age restrictions on the account and cannot be casually edited afterwards.
4. Enter an email address you control and set a strong password.
5. Pick your Online ID — the name other players see. It can be changed later, though changing it can cause display issues in some older games.
6. Accept the terms, then verify the email Sony sends you. The account is not fully active until you do.

Secure it before you put money on it

Turn on two-factor authentication straight away: Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Security > 2-Step Verification. A PSN account with a wallet balance and a game library is worth real money, and 2FA is the difference between an attempted takeover and a successful one.

Use an email address you will keep. Account recovery runs through it, and an old address you no longer read is how people lose accounts permanently.

Setting up a child account

If the account is for a child, create it as a family member under an adult account rather than as a standalone. That gives you parental controls: spending limits, age restrictions on games, and limits on online communication. Enter the child''s real date of birth — the controls depend on it.

What comes next

Once verified, sign in on your console and open the PlayStation Store. To add funds, buy a gift card matching your account region and redeem it through Settings or the store — the code applies to the account, so any device works.

Online multiplayer in most games needs a PlayStation Plus subscription; single-player games do not.
