Which PSN region should you choose?

When you create a PlayStation Network account you pick a country. That choice decides which store you see, which currency you are charged in, which cards you can redeem — and it is permanent. Sony does not let you change an account region afterwards. This is the single decision most worth getting right before you start.

What the region actually controls

• Which store you browse, including which games and editions appear and which are missing.
• The currency you are charged in, and therefore the prices you see.
• Which gift cards work. Only cards for your account region will redeem.
• Which sales you get. Regional stores run different promotions at different times.
• Subscription pricing. PS Plus costs different amounts in different stores.

What the region does not control is which games you can play. Your PS5 and PS4 play discs regardless of region, and a game bought on any account plays on your console. It is the store, not the hardware, that is regional.

What you cannot do

Three things people try, and none of them work. You cannot change the region of an existing account. You cannot move wallet funds from one account to another. And you cannot redeem a card from region A on an account from region B, no matter how the card was sold to you.

What you can do is create a second account in a different region on the same console and switch between them. Purchases stay separate — each account has its own library and its own wallet — but nothing stops you owning more than one.

How to decide

Ask what matters most to you:

Buying locally and simply. Pick the region whose cards are easiest for you to get hold of and whose currency you actually pay in. The simplest setup is the one where the card you can buy today is the card your account accepts.

Price. Some stores are consistently cheaper than others once converted, which is why Turkish and other regional accounts became popular. The trade-off is that you are then dependent on that region''s cards being available to you, and the saving moves with exchange rates rather than staying fixed.

Content and timing. A few games release earlier or exist only in certain stores, and Arabic language support is more common in the regional Middle East stores. If a specific title matters, check which store carries the version you want.

Existing account, wrong region?

You cannot convert it. What you can do is keep the existing account for everything you already own and create a second account in the region you want for new purchases. Games bought on the old account remain playable on the console.

Before you buy a card

Check your account region first: on PS5, Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Account Information. Then buy the card that matches it.
