PS5 error CE-107857-8 — what it means and how to fix it

A PS5 download or update failure — usually corrupted data or a full drive.

Updated

Sony's message: An error occurred while loading or updating the application.

This appears when a game fails to install or update. It is usually damaged download data rather than a hardware fault.

Fixes, in order

1. Check free space. An update needs room for both the old and new files while it works — often far more than the update''s size. Free up space and retry.

2. Restart fully and let the download resume.

3. Delete the partial download. Go to the game in your library, delete it, and download again from the start. A damaged partial file will keep failing no matter how many times you resume it.

4. Rebuild the database in Safe Mode — hold power until the second beep, connect the controller by USB, choose Rebuild Database.

5. Check your connection. An unstable line during a large download is a common cause. A cable is considerably more reliable than Wi-Fi here.

If it only happens on one game

Delete it completely and reinstall. Saves are stored separately and are not affected.

If it happens on everything

Rebuild the database first. If errors continue across many games and restarts, the internal storage may be failing — that is when it is worth having the console looked at.

If nothing works

If the error persists after all of the above, the console may need inspection. We repair consoles at all our branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days, and everything is tested before it goes back to you. If it is still under warranty, bring it in rather than opening it — an unauthorised repair attempt voids the cover.
