PS5 error CE-108255-1 — what it means and how to fix it
The most common PS5 error — a game crash. What causes it and the fixes in order.
Sony's message: An error occurred with the game or application.
This is the most frequently seen PS5 error, and in most cases it is not serious. It means a game closed unexpectedly. It appears more often after a sudden power cut, because an interrupted write can leave game data damaged — worth knowing here, where power interruptions are common.
Fixes, in order
1. Restart the game. If it happened once, this is often the end of it.
2. Restart the console fully. Not rest mode — power down completely, wait thirty seconds, start again.
3. Update the game and the system software. Many crashes are fixed by patches.
4. Rebuild the database. This is the fix that resolves most persistent cases. It does not delete games or saves.
- Hold the power button until you hear a second beep (about seven seconds), then release. The console starts in Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press PS.
- Choose Rebuild Database and wait.
5. Delete and reinstall the game if it only happens with one title. Your saves are separate and are not lost.
Reading the pattern
One game only → that game''s data. Reinstall it.
Every game → system-level. Rebuild the database; if it continues, the storage may be failing.
Started after a power cut → almost certainly corrupted data. Rebuild the database.
If nothing works
If the error persists after all of the above, the console may need inspection. We repair consoles at all our branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days, and everything is tested before it goes back to you. If it is still under warranty, bring it in rather than opening it — an unauthorised repair attempt voids the cover.
