Save data lost or not syncing

Losing a save is the one console problem that cannot always be undone, so the recovery steps matter — and so does the prevention.

First: check the cloud before panicking

If you have PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass Core or Nintendo Switch Online, your saves may already be backed up automatically.

PlayStation: Settings → Saved Data → Cloud Storage → Download to Console Storage.

Xbox: saves sync automatically to your account. Sign in on any Xbox and the save follows you.

Switch: System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud.

Check the date of the cloud save before downloading it. If the cloud copy is older than your local one, downloading it overwrites your newer progress — this is how people lose saves while trying to recover them.

Save not syncing

1. Check the subscription is active. Cloud saves stop when a subscription lapses, and on PlayStation the stored saves eventually expire.

2. Check the internet connection and that the console is signed in.

3. Upload manually rather than waiting for automatic sync.

4. Check the game supports it. A small number of games exclude cloud saves entirely.

Save missing after switching consoles

Saves are tied to the account, not the console. Sign in with the same account. If you used a different account by mistake, the save is on that one.

On PlayStation, also check the console is set as your primary console, or some content behaves differently.

Save lost after a crash or power cut

A save being written when power is lost can be corrupted. If the game will not load it, check for cloud or a secondary save slot — many games keep more than one.

Power interruptions are the most common cause of lost saves. That is worth knowing here specifically: a sudden cut during autosave is enough.

Prevention, which actually matters more

• Turn on cloud saves if your subscription includes them. This alone prevents almost every permanent loss.
• Copy saves to a USB drive periodically if you do not have a subscription — every platform supports this from the saved data settings, and it is free.
• Do not turn the console off during an autosave. Most games show an icon while writing.
• Back up before any troubleshooting — before a database rebuild, a reset, or sending a console for repair.

That last point is worth repeating. If you are bringing a console in for repair, back up your saves first. We test everything before returning it, but a failing drive may not survive, and no repair can recover data that was never backed up.
