Controller will not charge or the battery drains fast

Charging problems are usually the cable or the port, and short battery life on an older controller is usually normal wear rather than a fault.

Will not charge at all

1. Try a different cable. This is the answer most of the time. Many USB cables are charge-only or simply worn, and a controller cable gets pulled and bent constantly. Use the cable that came with the console.

2. Try a different power source — the console''s own USB port, then a phone charger, then a computer. If it charges from one and not another, the controller is fine.

3. Check the port for debris. Lint collects in the charging port. Look in with a light; clear it with short bursts of compressed air, never a metal pin.

4. Reset the controller. On a DualSense there is a small hole on the back — press inside with a straightened paperclip for five seconds. On Xbox, remove and refit the batteries or pack.

5. Leave it charging for an hour before judging. A fully drained battery shows no light for a long time.

Charges, but drains quickly

Some of this is normal and some is not.

Normal: a DualSense has shorter battery life than older controllers because of its haptics and adaptive triggers — those features consume real power. Several hours is expected, not tens of hours.

Normal wear: after two or three years of daily use, a rechargeable battery holds noticeably less. This is expected, not a defect.

Not normal: dropping from full to empty within an hour, or the controller switching off while showing charge.

Getting more from a charge

• Lower the controller speaker volume and the light bar brightness.
• Reduce vibration and trigger effect intensity in the console settings — these are the largest drains on a DualSense.
• Set the controller to switch off sooner when idle.
• Do not leave it charging permanently; batteries last longer with normal cycles.

Replacing the battery

Controller batteries are replaceable, and on a controller that is otherwise fine this is far cheaper than a new controller. It requires opening the controller, so it voids warranty if done yourself.
