PS5 disc drive not detected or not working

What to do when a PS5 does not recognise its disc drive, including the detachable drive.

Updated

Current PS5 models split into disc versions with a built-in drive and digital versions that can take a detachable drive sold separately. The fixes differ, so start by identifying which you have.

Detachable drive not recognised

If you have added a separate drive to a digital console and it is not detected:

1. Reseat it. Power the console down completely, remove the drive, and reattach it firmly until it clicks fully into place. A drive that is attached but not fully seated is the most common cause.

2. Connect the console to the internet. A detachable drive requires a one-time online pairing with the console before it works. Without an internet connection at that moment, it will not function no matter how well it is attached.

3. Update the system software and restart.

4. Check the side panel is properly closed — the panel has to sit flush for the drive to connect.

Built-in drive not reading discs

See disc read errors for the full sequence. In short: try another disc, clean the disc from the centre outwards, power cycle the console, update the system software, and rebuild the database in Safe Mode.

Grinding or repeated clicking

Stop using it. Mechanical noise from the drive while loading means a physical fault, and continuing risks scratching discs beyond recovery. This needs inspection rather than another attempt.

A disc stuck inside

Do not pull it. There is a manual release inside the console, but reaching it means removing a panel — and on a console under warranty that voids the cover. Bring it in instead; this is a quick job for us.

Worth knowing before you buy

If you are choosing between models, remember that a detachable drive is a separate purchase and needs the console online once to pair. See which PS5 to buy.

If it still fails

If nothing above works, the console needs inspection. We repair consoles and accessories at all our branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days, and everything is tested before it goes back to you. If it is still under warranty, bring it in rather than opening it — an unauthorised repair attempt voids the cover.
