External drive not recognised by the console
Why a console rejects an external drive, and the requirements each one has.
Consoles are stricter about external drives than computers are, and most rejections come down to a requirement not being met rather than a faulty drive.
The requirements
PS5 and PS4: USB 3.0 or later, between 250GB and 8TB. Must connect directly to the console, not through a hub.
Xbox: USB 3.0 or later, 256GB minimum.
Switch: does not support external drives for game storage at all — it uses microSD, and the Switch 2 specifically requires microSD Express.
A USB 2.0 drive will be rejected or refused for game storage on every console. Check the drive''s specification, not just its size.
Steps
1. Plug it directly into the console — the rear port if there is one. Hubs and extension cables are a frequent cause.
2. Try a different USB port and a different cable.
3. Check it has power. Large desktop drives need their own power supply; some portable drives draw more than a console port supplies.
4. Let the console format it. The console must format the drive itself — a drive formatted on a computer will not be accepted for game storage. Formatting erases everything on it, so move anything you need off first.
5. Check it is not already formatted for another console. A drive set up on an Xbox will not work on a PlayStation without reformatting, and vice versa.
What you can actually store
PS4 games run directly from an external drive on both PS4 and PS5.
PS5 games can be stored on an external drive but must be copied back to internal storage to play. That is still useful — copying back is far faster than redownloading.
Xbox Series games need the proprietary expansion card to run; an external USB drive can store them and run older Xbox One titles directly.

If the drive is failing
Clicking noises, disconnecting during use, or games that will not install are signs the drive itself is at fault. Test it on a computer before assuming the console is the problem.
If it still fails
If nothing above works, the console needs inspection. We repair consoles and accessories at all our branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days, and everything is tested before it goes back to you. If it is still under warranty, bring it in rather than opening it — an unauthorised repair attempt voids the cover.
