Rest mode problems — console will not wake or downloads stop
Why rest mode causes trouble, how to configure it properly, and when to stop using it.
Rest mode is convenient and it is also behind a surprising number of console problems. Most are configuration rather than faults.
Downloads stop in rest mode
By default the console may cut power to the network while resting. You have to allow it explicitly.
PS5: Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode → set Stay Connected to the Internet on, and Supply Power to USB Ports to Always.
PS4: Settings → Power Save Settings → Set Features Available in Rest Mode → enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
Xbox: set the power mode to Sleep (or Instant-on) rather than Energy-saving. Energy-saving shuts the console down fully and nothing downloads.
Console will not wake from rest mode
1. Press the console''s own power button rather than the controller. A controller that has lost pairing makes a working console look frozen.
2. Hold the console power button for ten seconds to force a full shutdown, then start normally.
3. Unplug the power cable for a minute if it still will not respond.
If this happens repeatedly, stop using rest mode for a while and see whether the problems stop. That is a useful diagnostic in itself.
Errors after waking
Crashes or errors that appear specifically after waking from rest mode usually mean corrupted system data. Rebuild the database — see Safe Mode and Rebuild Database.
Controller not charging in rest mode
USB power is disabled in rest mode by default on PlayStation. Set Supply Power to USB Ports to Always, otherwise the controller charges for a few hours at most and then stops.
The honest advice
Rest mode is genuinely useful for downloading overnight and resuming games instantly. But leaving a console in rest mode for weeks without a full restart lets small problems accumulate, and it is a common thread behind consoles that gradually become unstable.
Restart fully once a week. It takes a minute and prevents a lot.
And in hot weather, be aware that a console in rest mode still generates some heat. If it is in an enclosed cabinet, that matters — see overheating.
