PS5 Safe Mode and Rebuild Database — the fix for most errors

How to enter Safe Mode, what each option does, and which ones are safe to use.

Safe Mode is the menu behind most PS5 fixes, and Rebuild Database resolves a large share of errors people take a console to a shop for. Neither deletes your games or saves — but one option in that menu does, so it is worth knowing which.

How to enter Safe Mode

  1. Turn the console off completely — not rest mode. The light should be off.
  2. Press and hold the power button. You hear one beep immediately; keep holding.
  3. Release when you hear a second beep, about seven seconds later.
  4. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. Safe Mode does not accept a wireless controller — this is where most people get stuck.

What each option does

Restart PS5 — a normal restart. Harmless.

Change Video Output — useful if you get no picture on your TV.

Update System Software — install an update, including from a USB drive if the console cannot go online.

Restore Default Settings — resets settings only. Games and saves are kept.

Clear Cache and Rebuild Database — the important one. It scans the drive and builds a fresh index of your content. It does not delete games or saved data. It can take from a few minutes to over an hour depending on how much is installed.

Reset PS5 — ⚠️ this erases everything: games, saves, accounts, settings. Only use it as a genuine last resort, and back up your saves first.

When to rebuild the database

It is worth trying for: games crashing, install or update failures, the console running slowly, discs not being recognised, missing content in the library, and most CE- errors.

It is a safe, routine maintenance step, and it is the correct answer far more often than a factory reset.

Back up saves first

Rebuilding does not delete saves, but before any serious troubleshooting it is worth uploading them to cloud storage (with PlayStation Plus) or copying them to a USB drive from Settings, Saved Data.

If Safe Mode does not help

If the console will not enter Safe Mode, or the same errors return immediately after a rebuild, the storage or another component may be failing. We inspect and repair consoles at all branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days. Call 16280.
