A game will not install or update
Why installs stall or fail on any console, and the fixes that work.
Install and update failures look alarming and are almost always one of four things. The order below rules them out fastest.
1. Not enough space
The most common cause, and it is not always obvious. An update needs room for the old files and the new ones at the same time — a 20GB update can need 40GB or more free.
Free up considerably more space than the update''s stated size, then retry. See adding storage if this keeps happening.
2. A damaged partial download
If a download was interrupted, resuming it will keep failing at the same point forever. The fix is to delete it and start again rather than resuming.
Delete the game or the queued download entirely, then download from the start. Your saved data is stored separately and is not affected.
3. An unstable connection
Large downloads over unstable Wi-Fi fail regularly. A cable is considerably more reliable, and for a 100GB game the difference is not small.

4. Corrupted system data
If several games fail rather than one, rebuild the database:
PS5 and PS4: hold power until the second beep to enter Safe Mode, connect the controller by USB, choose Rebuild Database. It does not delete games or saves.
Xbox: hold the console power button for ten seconds, then restart. If that fails, clear local saved games from storage settings — cloud saves are unaffected.
Switch: hold power for 12 seconds, restart, then delete and redownload the software.
Disc games that will not install
Clean the disc with a soft dry cloth from the centre outwards. If other discs install fine, the disc is the problem. If no disc installs, see disc not reading.
When it is the storage itself
If installs keep failing across many games after a database rebuild, and especially if the console has also been crashing or running slowly, the drive may be failing. That is worth having checked.
If it still fails
If nothing above works, the console needs inspection. We repair consoles at all our branches except Alexandria, usually within one to three days, and everything is tested before it goes back to you. If it is still under warranty, bring it in rather than opening it — an unauthorised repair attempt voids the cover.
