How to redeem a Steam wallet code
Adding funds to your Steam balance from the client, the website or the mobile app — and how wallet codes differ from game keys.
A Steam wallet code adds money to your Steam balance, which you then spend on anything in the store. That is different from a game key, which unlocks one specific title. The two look similar on a card and go through different paths, so identify which you have before you start.
In the Steam desktop client
- Open Steam and sign in to the account you want credited.
- Click Games in the top menu bar.
- Select Redeem a Steam Wallet Code.
- Enter the code exactly as printed and confirm.
- The balance updates immediately.
Some versions route this through Activate a Product on Steam instead, where you choose the wallet-code branch when the wizard asks. Both reach the same place.
In a browser
Sign in on the Steam website and use the wallet code redemption page in your account settings. Enter the code and continue.
In the mobile app
Open the Steam mobile app, tap your profile picture, go to Wallet, and choose the option to redeem a gift card or wallet code. Wallet codes work reliably in the app; game keys sometimes do not, which is one more reason to know which type you are holding.
Checking your balance
Your balance appears at the top right of the Steam client next to your account name, and in Account Details. Steam wallet funds do not expire.
Stacking codes
If you have several wallet codes, redeem them one at a time — Steam adds each to the same balance. There is no need to spend one before entering the next.
Region matters
Steam wallet codes are tied to a currency and region. A code issued for one region will not redeem on an account set to another, and Steam will tell you so plainly. Your Steam account region is based on where the account was set up and where you make purchases from; it is not something to switch casually, since Steam restricts how often it can change.
If the code is rejected
Three usual causes. The code is a game key, not a wallet code — try the Activate a Product flow instead. There is a typo — paste rather than type. Or the region does not match your account.
